Math Challenge Committee

The CUNY Math Challenge is overseen by an expert committee consisting of the following distinguished faculty from math and computer science departments across the CUNY system:

Amotz Bar-Noy is a professor in the Department of Information and Computer Science at Brooklyn College. He teaches courses in algorithms, and his areas of specialization include algorithms and communication networks. His favorite math subject is discrete math.

Kent D. Boklan is on the faculty at Queens College. He is a mathematician (number theory) and a National Security Agency (NSA)-trained cryptographer. He teaches cryptography classes.

Ted Brown is the executive officer of the Ph.D. Program in Computer Science at the CUNY Graduate Center and executive director of the CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development.

Mangala Kothari is an assistant professor at LaGuardia Community College. She teaches courses in college algebra and trigonometry and pre-calculus. Her areas of interest include functional analysis and operator theory, and her favorite math subject is algebra.

Rados Radocic is an associate professor of mathematics at Baruch College. His main research interests are in the areas of discrete and computational geometry, Ramsey theory, extremal combinatorics, and graph theory. He is also interested in applications of probabilistic techniques to finance. He earned his B.S. and his Ph.D. in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team at the International Math Olympiads in 1995 and 1996.

Alexander Ryba is a professor of computer science at Queens College. He has coached math problem-solving teams at Queens College, Marquette University, and the University of Michigan. He was a member of the British team at the International Math Olympiad in 1976.

Jason Samuels is in the Math Department at Borough of Manhattan Community College. His research interests include visualization and technology in math education, particularly in calculus instruction, and problem-solving. He is the coach of the Math Team.
